The Maine baseball team was at home hoping to continue its winning ways with a doubleheader with Stony Brook Saturday, while the softball team tried to stay unbeaten in conference at Albany.
In game one at Mahaney Diamond in Orono, a Jonathan Bennett RBI single and a good start from pitcher by Eddie Emerson had Maine up 1-0 after six innings.
Stony Brook rallied though to score two in the seventh to knock out Emerson, then two more in eighth to pick up the 4-1 America East win and snap the Black Bears four game win streak.
Danny Casals had two hits for Maine. John Tuccillo, Bobby Honeyman, and Chris Hamilton provided the RBI hits for Stony Brook. Emerson (0-4) went 6.1 innings, allowing two runs, four hits, with four strikeouts. Brian Herrmann (4-2) went distance for Seawolves pitching 9.0 innings, allowing one run, six hits, and five strikeouts.
In Saturdays second game, Maine picked up the split with a 4-2 win.
Colin Ridley had two hits and two RBI, while Christopher Bec and Cody Pasic also knocked in a run a piece to back starter John Arel.
Arel (3-0) allowed two runs, five hits, with five strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Cody Laweryson picked up his second save allowing two hits, but striking out two in the seventh. Honeyman had three more hits in game two for Stony Brook, while Bret Clarke (2-3) suffered the loss on the hill.
Maine is now 9-20, 5-3 in America East, while Stony Brook is 16-12, 5-3. The two teams play a single game Sunday at 12 p.m.
At Albany, New York the Maine softball team tried to improve to 4-0 in conference play and took a 2-0 lead, but the home Great Danes rallied for a 3-2 eight inning victory.
Kristen Niland had given Maine a 2-0 lead with a two run homer in the top of the fourth inning. It was the first of the season for Niland.
Maine had a golden opportunity in the top of the sixth with runners on second and third and nobody out, but the threat was turned away by Albany. The Great Danes tied it on a two run double by Chelsea Henige in the bottom of the sixth to make it 2-2. Maine had another shot in the top of the eighth as the game moved extra innings, but had a runner thrown out at the plate trying to score from second on a single to left field.
Albany (15-8, 3-1 America East) won the game off Maine reliever Kyleigh O’Donnell (2-6) on a walkoff single by Sarah Petzold in the bottom of the eighth inning, ending the Bears five game win streak. Maine starter Annie Kennedy went 7.0 innings, allowing two runs, five hits, with six strikeouts.
Maine is now 12-15, 3-1 AE. Originally scheduled for a doubleheader Saturday, the two teams now have to play two Sunday starting at 12 p.m. due to weather in Albany.
