The University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs captured their second national title in school history Saturday night, by hanging on to defeat the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 2-1 in the NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey championship game at the XCel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Karson Kuhlman and Jared Thomas both scored in the first for UMD (25-16-3). Notre Dame got on the board 7:40 into the second on a goal by Andrew Oglevie. Kuhlman added an assist on the Thomas goal for the winners. Notre Dame had some great chances to tie the game in the second and third period, but couldn’t come up with the equalizer. UMD outshot ND 35-20 in the game. Hunter Shepard made 19 saves in the net for Duluth, while Cale Morris was the tough luck loser with 33 stops in the Irish net. UMD improved to 23-0-1 this season when leading after two periods in the win.

UMD won their first title in 2011. Notre Dame is still without a national in college hockey, and finished their season at 28-10-2.
