McCullum leads Cobras over Mammoths

PORTLAND, Maine- Carolina Cobras quarterback Charles McCullum accounted for all eight of his teams touchdowns Saturday night, as Carolina defeated the Maine Mammoths 56-42 in National Arena League football action before 4,932 fans at the Cross Insurance Arena. The game was the franchise home opener for the Mammoths, who were coming off a franchise and season opening 51-24 loss at Massachusetts last Saturday.

McCullum passed for five touchdowns, and ran for three others as the Cobras improved to 1-1. Maine quarterback Jonathan Bane also passed for five touchdowns, but threw three interceptions as Maine fell to 0-2.

Derrick Macon had a pair of touchdown catches for the Mammoths, as did Edgar Poe Jr. Devin Wilson also caught a touchdown, and scored another on a short run on a reverse play late in second quarter. Henry Nell added a field goal in the game.

McCullum had touchdown throws to Tyone Laughinghouse,Tyrell Goodman, Phillip Barnett, and a pair to Fabian Guerra. McCullum had short TD runs of 2, 1, and 2 yards. Craig Peterson also added a fourth quarter field goal for the winners.

Carolina returns home next Saturday to host Massachusetts, while Maine hits the road to battle the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks.
