Patrick Marleau scored a pair of goals Monday night, as the Toronto Maple Leafs topped the Boston Bruins 4-2 in game three of an NHL first round series at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. Boston still leads the series 2-1.
James van Riemsdyk scored a first period powerplay goal to give Toronto a 1-0 at the end of 20 minutes. Adams McQuaids point shot trickled past Maple Leaf goalie Frederik Andersen to make it 1-1 just 3:06 into the second. 43 seconds later, Marleau scored his first of the game to regain a 2-1 Leafs lead. Zdeno Chara got his first of the playoffs 2:30 later to once again tie the game 2-2. Auston Matthews scored the eventual game winner at 14:47 of the middle period.
Boston hit two goal posts in the third period, and both teams had great chances to either tie it or extend the lead. With the Bruins pushing for the tying marker, Marleau beat Boston netminder Tuuka Rask on a two on one break to ice the game with just 3:35 left. Sean Kuraly had two assists for the Bruins, while Mitchell Marner had a pair of helpers for the Leafs.
Rask ended with 26 saves in the Boston loss. Andersen made 40 big saves in the win for Toronto. Boston was 0-1 on the powerplay, while Toronto was 1-1. Game four will be in Toronto Thursday night at 7 pm.
