The Maine baseball team visited UMass-Lowell at Edward A. LeLacheur Field for an America East doubleheader on Saturday. The two teams would end up splitting a pair of games, with a single game still to be played Sunday.
In game one, Danny Casals only hit was the biggest of the game launching a three run homer in the top of the 10th, to lead Maine to a 9-4 win.
Hernen Sardinas had four hits and a pair of RBI, while Jeremy Pena also had two hits and a pair of RBI for Maine. Starter Zach Winn went 4.1 innings, allowing one earned run, five hits, two walks, with six strikeouts. Connor Johnson (2-0) picked up the win in relief allowing no runs, two hits, one walk, with two strikeouts in 2.0 innings.
Nick Rand (1-2) took the loss in relief for Lowell, allowing five earned runs, and seven hits in 5.0 innings. Cam Climo had three hits and an RBI in the loss for the Riverhawks.
In game two, Maine starter John Arel pitched a no-hitter but was the tough luck loser as Lowell earned the split with a 1-0 win.
Arel (4-1) allowed no hits, one earned run, three walks, with 12 strikeouts in 6.0 innings. The Riverhawks got the lone run of the game when Ben Prada used some heads up base running scoring from third, when Maine tried to throw out a runner advancing from first to third on a wild pitch. Kevin Doody led the Bears offense with two hits.
Andrew Ryan (3-2) started and earned the win for UML, allowing no runs, five hits, one walk, with six strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Luke Tomczyk pitched a perfect seventh in the win for the Riverhawks.
Maine is now 11-24 overall, 6-5 in America East. Lowell is 16-19, 7-7. The two teams play a single game at noon Sunday. Maine then returns to home to host a non conference game Wednesday night against Bowdoin, before traveling to UMBC for a three game series next weekend.
