In a battle of the two top teams in America East Tuesday afternoon, the University of Massachusetts-Lowell rallied past the Maine Black Bears 5-4 in softball action at River View Field at Lowell, Mass.
After trailing 1-0, Maine took a 3-1 lead on a solo homer and RBI double by Maddie Decker, and an RBI groundout by Laurine German. The Riverhawks tied things up on RBI doubles by Courtney Cashman and Vanessa Cooper in the fourth and fifth, respectively. Alyssa Derrick regained the lead for the Bears with an RBI single in the seventh. But in the bottom half and the last at bat for UML, Sydney Barker homered to tie it, and then the next hitter Maria Moccio also hit a solo shot to make it back to back and end things in walkoff fashion. Lowell stays on top in the AE standings with a 16-22 overall record, and now 10-2 in conference.
Annie Kennedy started in the circle for 18-19, 7-3 Maine. Kennedy allowed two runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings. Kyleigh O’Donnell (5-7) took the loss, allowing three runs and four hits in 2.0 innings. Kaysee Talcik (5-14) earned the win in relief for UML, allowing just a run on four hits in 4.0 innings. Derrick, Decker, and Meaghan Royle had two hits a piece for Maine. Cashman had three hits, and Barker two for the hosts. Maine will host Binghamton at Kessock Field for a three game series beginning Saturday.
