DEXTER– Avery Herrick came into the game with one out and the bases loaded in the top of the 7th inning. The freshman recorded a strikeout and a pop out to close a 4-3 Dexter Tigers victory over Penquis in a class C softball game played on Friday afternoon.
The Patriots took their only lead of the game in the first inning when they took advantage of a Dexter error. The Tigers responded in the second inning when Tory Asbury ripped a double to right center field, Caitlyn Hardy smacked a single, while Regan McNally sent pinch runner Jade Wintle home to even the score.
The Tigers took a lead they wouldn’t give back in the third inning. Ashley Downing started things with a double, Peyton Grant hit a single, while Kaitlyn Webber’s grounder sent Downing home.
Hardy reached base all three plate appearances. Hardy walked in the fourth inning, went to second base on a wild pitch. Hardy scored on McNally’s second RBI of the game.
McNally was also doing her thing in the circle. She went through a stretch where she retired nine out of 10 with the only baserunner reaching on an error. McNally allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks, while striking out two.
The Patriots started the seventh inning down 4-2. They were able to draw two walks off McNally. Faith Sickler had a single, Sydney Fowles had a run scoring hit. Megan Valvo’s walk loaded the bases and sent McNally out of the game. The freshman Herrick left the bases loaded and gave the Tigers their first win of the season.
