Both the University of Maine baseball and softball teams finished off their three game conference series on Sunday, with baseball trying to avoid a sweep at UMBC and softball looking to take the rubber game on Senior Day at home against Binghamton.
At Baltimore, Maryland the Retrievers from UMBC finished off a three game weekend sweep, taking down Maine 5-2.
Zack Bright opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly RBI in the fifth to make it 1-0 UMBC. The Retrievers got all they would need and more with a four run sixth. Zack DeThomasis and Matt Campbell hit RBI singles, followed by a fielders choice RBI from Bright and a sacrifice RBI flyout by Joey Goodwin to make it 5-0. Christopher Bec had an RBI groundout, and Caleb Kerbs an RBI single for Maines only runs in the ninth.
Cody Laweryson (0-3) took the loss on the mound for Maine, allowing all five runs, 11 hits, and four strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Matt Chanin (1-3) got the win for UMBC, allowing no runs, two hits, and four strikeouts in 8.0 innings. Maine is now 11-28, 6-9 America East. UMBC is 17-20, 9-6. Maine will next be at UMass for a non conference game Wednesday at 3 pm, before hosting a three game America East series with Binghamton starting next Saturday.
In Orono at Kessock Field, the Maine softball seniors played their final home game of their careers. Binghamton spoiled the occasion however, with a 3-1 extra inning win.
A throwing error by Binghamton catcher Sara Herskowitz in the third, allowed Erika Leonard to score to make it 1-0 Maine. Binghamton tied it in the sixth when Makayla Alvarez reached on a Maine error allowing the tying run to score to make it 1-1. The game would head into extra innings, and Rozlyn Price hit a two run single in the top of the eighth to make the difference. Maine had two runners on in the bottom half, but couldn’t get anything across.
Annie Kennedy (9-6) took her second loss of the weekend and went the distance for the Black Bears, allowing two earned runs, eight hits, with five strikeouts in the 8.0 inning effort. Chelsea Howard (3-2) picked up the win in relief for the Bearcats, allowing no runs, four hits, with six strikeouts in 5.2 innings. Binghamton is now 13-22 overall, and 6-8 America East.
Maine is now 19-21, 8-5. The Bears will finish the regular season with a three game conference series at Stony Brook beginning Friday.
