The Maine baseball team hit eight homeruns and pounded out 26 hits Wednesday afternoon, en route to a 24-5 non conference win over the UMass Minutemen at Amherst, Massachusetts.
Maine (12-28) had 14 extra base hits, with all nine players in starting lineup having at least one. Ten players had at least one hit, and eight scored at least one run. 22 of the 24 Maine runs came with two out.
Christopher Bec led the way with three homeruns, 5-6 at the plate, with six RBI, and five runs scored. Hernen Sardinas was also 5-6, with two homers, six RBI, and five runs scored. Kevin Doody and Danny Casals each had four hit days. Two of Casals hits were solo homers. Jonathan Bennett added the other Black Bear homer.
Freshman Peter Kemble (Bangor High) started on the mound for Maine, and allowed one run, two hits, with four strikeouts in 3.0 innings. Chris Murphy (1-5) got the win in relief, allowing one run, two hits in his 2.0 innings.
Marcus Fry led UMass (13-22) with a pair of hits and two RBI. Starter Sam Cooper (0-3) allowed seven runs, eight hits in 2.0 innings.
Maine returns home to host Binghamton at Mahaney Diamond Saturday for a three game weekend America East series. A pair of games begin at noon, with a single game to be played Sunday at 11 am.
