May 2, 2018

Former University of Maine captain and NHL center Jim Montgomery has found a new address. According to Complete Hockey News, Montgomery will be announced as the new head coach of the Dallas Stars later this week. He will take over for Ken Hitchcock, who retired after just one season in his second stint with the Stars.

Montgomery has been the head coach of the Denver Pioneers for the past five seasons, winning a national title in 2016-17, two postseason tournaments, and was named the NCAA coach of the year in 2017. Montgomerys coaching record was 125-57-26 in his time in Denver.

Montgomery helped Maine win a national championship in his senior season in 1992-93, before playing in the NHL with the St Louis Blues, Montreal Canadiens, Philadelphia Flyers, San Jose Sharks, and Dallas Stars. He had a total of nine goals and 25 assists in 122 career games in a total of six NHL seasons.

Montgomery, 48, also spent time as an assistant coach at Notre Dame and RPI, before landing his first career coaching job for the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL in 2012. He will now coach former Maine standouts in forward Devin Shore, and goaltender Ben Bishop.
