After losing the opening game of the North Atlantic Conference tournament to Thomas College on Friday, the Husson Eagles softball team turned up the intensity culminating with a 4-1 win Sunday in the conference championship game over New England College at Hussons O’Keefe Field. With the win, Husson (21-13) advances to the NCAA Div III softball tournament.
Husson got all the runs they needed in a three run bottom of fourth inning. Tamara Aunchman, Bri Brochu, and Chloe Gorey all had RBI hits to make it 3-0 Eagles. Julia D’Andrea came back with an RBI single to get the Pilgrims on the board in the top of the sixth. Brochu added another one in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI triple.
Jen Jones (16-7) won her fourth straight game in the circle, allowing one run, six hits, no walks, with seven strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Taylor Barbour (12-12) took the loss for NEC, allowing four runs, 11 hits, with one walk, and six strikeouts in 6.0 innings. NEC ends their season at 17-23.
Brochu and Gorey had three hits each, while Aunchman and Madelyn Fowler had a pair of hits for the Eagles. Husson has outscored their opponents 18-2 in the current four game winning streak, and allowing them to win the title coming out of the losers bracket of the tournament.
Husson will find out Monday at 1 pm who they play and when and where during the NCAA selection show.
