In their second straight eliminaton game in as many days, the Maine softball team saw their season come to an end Friday afternoon with a 2-0 loss to Stony Brook at the America East Tournament at Bearcats Sports Complex in Vestal, New York.
The Seawolves got single runs in the fifth and the sixth to provide the difference in the game. The Black Bears were held to four hits by Stony Brook starter Melissa Rahrich. Irene Rivera walked with two outs and the bases loaded in the fifth for the first run. Allyssa Malony sent a sacrifice fly to center in the sixth to pad the lead. Maddie Decker led off the seventh with a single for Maine, but Rachel Carlson grounded into a fielders choice, Kristen Niland struck out looking, and Faythe Goins flied out to right to end it.
Kyleigh O’Donnell (6-8) took the loss in circle for Maine, who ends their season at 22-25. O’Donnell allowed two runs, five hits, one walk, with two strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Rahrich (15-10) only allowed the four Maine singles, with one walk, and five strikeouts for Stony Brook. German, Alyssa Derrick, and Nilland had the other Black Bear hits. Stony Brook is now 25-21, and was scheduled to face top seeded Albany in another elimination game later Friday afternoon. The winner will need to knock off #2 UMass-Lowell twice Saturday to take the title.
