Each week during the high school sports season, Eastern Maine Sports will announce a female and male athlete of the week. You can send your nominations during the week to Marc at easternmainesports@gmail.com. When you send your nominations include the athlete, name of the school, stats for the week of the nomination. Here is a full list of the 254 past athlete of the week winners.
This week, we had six Rowell’s Garage female athlete of the week nominations. Leine McKechnie earned her seventh athlete of the week honor, including second in a row. The sophomore is only the seventh student/athlete to be named athlete of the week at least seven times. She joins Kolleen Bouchard (19) from Houlton, Justin Thompson (9) from Schenck, Bryce Gilbert (9) from PCHS, Taylor Schildroth (9) from George Stevens, Karli Theberge (7) from Hermon, and Gage Feeney (7) from Washington Academy. McKechnie allowed only two hits in 20 innings helping the PVHS Howlers go 4-0 this week and stay undefeated on the season,
The Charles Inn female athlete of the week
Leine Mckechnie- PVHS – softball- pitched a perfect game with 10 strikeouts in 28-0 win over Schenck. Pitched a one-hitter with eight strikeouts plus hit two homers,one double, and had five RBI in 13-0 win over Penquis. Had five strikeouts in two innings in 32-0 win over Lee. Pitched a one-hitter with 17 strikeouts in 8-0 win over PCHS.
Runner up
Kourtney Thurlow- Mattanawcook- softball- had six RBI, including a grand slam in 10-2 win over Stearns.
Other nominations
Mackenzie Beaudry- Foxcroft – softball- struck out 10 and allowed only two earned runs in 4-3 win over Nokomis.
Jenna Clukey- Foxcroft – softball- had three hits, including a double and one RBI in 4-3 win over Nokomis.
Haley McLaughlin- Mattanawcook- softball- pitched a four hitter with 12 strikeouts in 7-6 win over Dexter. Struck out 16 in 10-2 win over Stearns.
McKenna Smith- Old Town- softball- pitched a three-hitter and struck out 13 in 4-1 win over Hermon.
Gabby Poulin – Central- softball- went 3-4 with three doubles and four RBI in 10-1 win over Dexter.
Katelin Saunders- Bucksport- softball- pitched a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts in 14-1 win over Searsport.
