Former New York Yankee and current Seattle Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano has been suspended 80 games by Major League Baseball, the league office announced Tuesday for violating the banned substance policy.
Cano tested positive for Furosemide, also known as Lasix, that is used as a diuretic and often used to mask other banned substances during urine tests.
Cano, who was placed on the disabled list as a result of being hit by a pitch Sunday resulting in a fractured hand, will begin his suspension immediately. He also won’t be eligible to compete in postseason play this season. Currently the Mariners are 1.5 games behind front running Anaheim and Houston in the A.L. West, and .5 games back of the second wild card team.
The 35 year old Cano was hitting. 287 with four homers in 169 plate appearances this season. For his career, Cano has 2,417 hits (fifth all time) and has hit 305 homers to along with his .304 batting average. He signed a 10 year 240 million dollar contract with Seattle in the 2013-14 off-season, and is in year five of that signing. He spent nine seasons with the Yankees, belting 204 of his 305 homers. He has also competed in eight All Star games in his 14 year career, with the last coming in 2017 with Seattle where he batted .280 with 23 homers and 97 RBI for the M’s.
