Maine baseball drops final non conference game of season

May 15, 2018

Danny Casals had three hits and three RBI, including his 12th and 13th homeruns of the season Tuesday afternoon, but the Maine baseball team would fall short 9-7 against Boston College in their final non conference game of the season at Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. The Eagles out of the ACC would pick up their 17th win of the season in a rain shortened eight inning contest. The loss ends a five game win streak for Maine.

In a 1-1 game in the top of the third, Casals drove a two run homer over the left field fence to make it 3-1 Maine. BC came right back as Brian Dempsey had an RBI single, and Gian Martellini hit a sacrifice fly for an RBI to make it 3-3. Chris Galland gave the Eagles the lead with an RBI single in the fourth to make it 4-3. Kevin Doody reached on an error in the fifth allowing Casals to score to make it 4-4, before Joe Suozzi hit a sacifice fly RBI for the Eagles in the bottom half to give BC back a 5-4 lead. Freshman Ben Terwilliger hit a two run homer for Maine, his first collegiate round tripper in the top of the seventh to give the visiting Bears a 6-5 advantage. That was short lived however, as Martellini hit a two run double in the bottom half making it 7-6 Eagles. Casals hit a one out solo homer in top of eighth to tie things at 7-7. BC got the winning runs on a hit by pitch and a wild pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom half. Then the weather came. After a 23 minute lightning delay that brought heavy rains, it was decided to call the game with the Eagles still having the bases loaded and one out. Dempsey led BC with four hits. Casals reached base three times, and also scored three runs, while Christopher Bec and Jeremy Pena also had two hits a piece for Maine.

Nick Silva (2-6) took the loss in relief for Maine, allowing two earned runs, one hit, one hit by pitch, and a wild pitch in 0.1 innings. Eddie Emerson started for the Bears and allowed three runs (two earned), three hits, four walks, and four strikeouts in 3.0 innings. Maine used a total of six pitchers. Thomas Lane (3-5) picked up the 1.1 inning win in relief for Boston College allowing an earned run on one hit. The Eagles also used six pitchers on the day. Boston College now improves to 17-30 on the season.

Maine falls to 17-30, and will take their 11-10 America East record into an America East regular season series finale against Hartford. The three game set opens with a doubleheader at 12 pm Friday, with a single game scheduled also for 12 pm on Saturday.
