As first reported by the New York Times, Boston University head coach David Quinn has accepted an offer to become the new head coach of the New York Rangers.
Quinn will take over for Alain Vigneault, who was fired by the organization after five years at the helm. Quinn has been the head coach for the Terriers for the last five seasons, making an NCAA tournament appearance in four out of five of those years, including a loss in the national title game in the 2014-15 campaign.
Reportedly, the Rangers and Quinn had been discussing a five year contract worth 2.5 million per year. Only Mike Babcock, Joel Quenneville, Claude Julien, and Todd McLellan are known to make more per season than the offer that was discussed. Quinn is the second college hockey coach in about month to be nabbed by the NHL. Former Denver coach and University of Maine hockey player Jim Montgomery had recently been named the Dallas Stars new head man.
