The Boston Red Sox finished off a very successful homestand Wednesday afternoon by defeating the Toronto Blue Jays 6-4 at Fenway Park to sweep the three game series. Boston went 5-1 on the six game homestand by also taking two of three over the past weekend from the Atlanta Braves.
Jackie Bradley Jr had an RBI double in the third, and Eduardo Nunez hit a solo homer in the fifth to stake the Sox to a 2-0 lead, before Teoscar Hernandez tied it with a two run homer in the sixth. JD Martinez hit his league leading 18th homer, a two run shot in bottom of sixth to make it 4-2 Boston. A Nunez RBI double and a Brock Holt RBI single in the eighth extended the lead to 6-2. Toronto got two runs back in the ninth on a two run double by Kendrys Morales off closer Craig Kimbrel, that were charged to reliever Brian Johnson who allowed the first two Toronto batters to reach on singles. Kimbrel then got a groundout, a strikeout, and another ground out to pick up his 18th save.
Martinez and Nunez both had two hits, as did Andrew Benintendi who continues to be red hot at the plate to raise his average to .294 for the 39-17 Red Sox. Eduardo Rodriguez (6-1) picked up the pitching win, allowing two earned runs, three hits, just one walk, and seven strikeouts in 6.2 innings. He didn’t allow a hit until a Morales one out single in the fifth. Boston is now 10-1 in games Rodriguez starts.
Boston, now 8-2 in their last 10 games, heads to Houston for a four game series with the current A.L. West leading Astros. Drew Pomeranz will be on the mound when the series starts at 8:10 Thursday night.
