DOVER-FOXCROFT- Cailin Seavey got things started for the Foxcroft Academy softball team on Thursday afternoon. Seavey finished things when she hit an infield single to score Amber Richard and give the Ponies a 2-1 win over Ellsworth in a Maine Principals’ Association quarterfinal win. It is the first home class B quarterfinal win for Foxcroft Academy in school history.
Seavey led off the bottom of the first inning with a sharply hit double. She advanced to third on a wild pitch. Seavey made it 1-0 when she scored off a single from Kiara Prescott.
Mackenzie Beaudry made sure that one run held up during the middle innings. Beaudry only allowed two hits and went through a stretch where she retired 12 of 13 in the middle innings.
Ellsworth evened the game up in the top of the seventh. Shelby Cote led off with a walk, moved to second on a bunt from Mara Pickering and to third on a Kate Hammer ground out. Cote scored on a wild pitch. Beaudry stranded two runners to keep the game even going to the bottom of the seventh inning.
Richard led off with a single, Cassidy Marsh was a hit by pitch. Ava Rayfield put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position. Seavey followed with a sharp single to shortstop to send Richard home. The win sends the 15-3 Ponies into the semifinals where they will meet top seed and undefeated Brewer. Eastern Maine Sports will have live audio coverage starting at 2:55 PM on Saturday.
Mackenzie Chipman allowed two runs on six hits for the Eagles. She didn’t issue a walk and stuck out two. Ellsworth finished their season with a 7-11 record. They were the 13th seed and advanced to the quarterfinals with a prelim win over Hermon.
