John Hicks, Leonys Martin, and Jose Iglesias all had two hits and two RBI each on Thursday night as the Detroit Tigers salvaged the final game of a three game series with a 7-2 win over the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.
Detroit jumped on Boston rookie starter Jalen Beeks with a five run first inning on the strength of a Jeimer Candelario RBI double, a two run single by Hicks, and a two run homer by Martin.
Andrew Beninitendi had two hits and an RBI for the 43-20 Red Sox, leading off the bottom of the first with his 11th homer of the season. Boston had chances to get back into the game with the bases loaded twice, but would strand 18 runners on the night in having their four game win streak snapped.
Beeks (0-1) in his first major league start gave up six earned runs, seven hits, three walks, with four strikeouts in 4.0 innings. The bullpen remained solid as Brian Johnson and Hector Valazquez only allowed one earned, three hits, with seven strikeouts in the final five innings. Matthew Boyd (4-4) earned the win for the Tigers, allowing just two earned runs and four hits in 6.1 innings.
Chris Sale heads to the hill Friday night as the Red Sox welcome in the Chicago White Sox for a three game series at 7:10. Dylan Covey gets the call for Chicago.
