It has been stated multiple times, the Celtics need a true big man. Well, they may have done just that in this year’s draft.
The Boston Celtics came into this year’s draft with the number 27 overall pick, although there were multiple rumors that they were looking to trade up, possibly into the lottery, and even into the top four, but Danny Ainge decided to stand pat with the 27th pick. With that pick, the Celtics selected big man out of Texas A&M, Robert Williams III.
Williams, who is 20 years old, is a 6-9, 240-pound Sophomore who in his final season at Texas A&M averaged 10.4 PPG, 9.2 Rebounds, and 2.6 Blocks en route to a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Williams was ranked number 12 in the ESPN 100, and was even projected to be top 10 leading into the draft, but fell to 27 after concerns of his work ethic and attitude surfaced.
That aside the biggest piece about this pick by the Celtics is that they may very well have gotten the young big man they have been searching for, Williams is a tough player who with a wingspan of 7’6” could be a huge piece under the rim and could be a perfect fit for this young and talented Celtics team. Put that with playing under Coach Brad Stevens, the Celtics could have very well gotten the steal of the draft.
