Hicks, Yanks play long ball to beat up on Price, Sox to take series

July 1, 2018

David Price was roughed up, giving up eight earned runs over just 3.1 innings Sunday night as the New York Yankees hit six homeruns to tie up the American League East once again by rolling past the Boston Red Sox 11-1 at Yankee Stadium to take the rubber game of a three game series.

After Boston had rolled to an 11-0 win Saturday night behind Chris Sale, Aaron Judge and Gleybur Torres hit first inning homers to give the Yankees an early 4-0 lead. Aaron Hicks continued the NY onslaught with his first of the night, a two run homer, in the second inning. A pair of solo homers by Kyle Higashioka and Hicks second of the night in the fourth made it 8-0. Didi Gregorius added a sacrifice fly for an RBI also in the same inning. The homer from Higashioka was the first of his career. Hicks finished off his huge night with his third homer, another solo shot in the eighth off Hector Velasquez. Hicks becomes the third Yankee all time to ever hit three homeruns in a game against the Red Sox. Neil Walker added an RBI single to finish off the scoring on the night for the hosts.

Price (9-6), allowed nine hits, didn’t walk a batter, and struck out three. Boston was held to just two hits by New York starter Luis Severino (13-2), a third inning single by Andrew Benintendi and a sixth inning single by Mitch Moreland. Severino walked three and struck out six in 6.2 innings of work. Boston got their lone run in the ninth as Sandy Leon had a one out double, and Blake Swihart had an infield single. Rafael Devers had the only RBI with a fielders choice groundout off Aroldis Chapman.

Boston opens up a three game series at 7:05 Monday night in Washington against the Nationals. The Sox send Rick Porcello to the mound, to be opposed by Nationals righty Max Scherzer.
