Old Town captures 11/12 baseball tournament

OLD TOWN, Me- The Maine District 3 Little League All Stars held their championship round of ages 11/12 on Thursday evening. Old Town was in the drivers seat in the double elimination tournament coming into the game undefeated and having to be beat twice. Old Town didn’t have to go another day, finishing it off with a perfect 4-0 record by defeating the visitors from Brewer/Glenburn/Orrington 8-4 at the Knights of Columbus Field.

Old Town jumped on top in the bottom of the first when catcher Jackson Lizzotte hit a two run homer to left center to make it 2-0. B/G/O got a run back in the top of the second on an error by Old Town second baseman Preston Vose to cut it to 2-1. Grayson Thibeault put the hosts back up by a pair in the bottom of the second with an RBI triple down the right field line to make it 3-1. B/G/O took their first and only lead of the evening with a three run spot in the top of the third. After two straight outs were recorded, Grady Vanidestine singled, Jack Mason reached on an error, and Silas Keefe singled in Vanistendine to make it 3-2. Dominick Stecher followed with another RBI single, and Keefe scored on a throwing error on the play to give the visitors a 4-3 lead.

Lizzotte was at it again in the bottom of the third, as his RBI single to left tied the game 4-4. The decisive inning was the bottom of the fourth for Old Town. Three errors by the visitors allowed Old Town to score four times and end the scoring on the day. Lizzotte drove in his fourth run of the game in the inning with a double, and Mason, Jack Shuck, and Hunter Merrithew made costly errors that allowed Old Town to put the game away.

Lizzotte ended the evening 3-4 with a single, double, and a homer to finish with four RBI. Keefe was 2-3 with an RBI for B/G/O, who ends tourney play with a record of 4-2. Brendan Mahaney got the win on the mound for Old Town going 5.1 innings, allowing four runs (two earned), five hits, one walk, and three strikeouts. Mason took the loss for B/G/O going 4.0 innings, allowing eight runs (five earned), nine hits, two walks, with four strikeouts.

The Old Town team will now head to the State Tournament in Machias with those dates and times still to be determined. This District 3 All Star Tournament consisted of 11 teams, including area teams from Hermon, Hampden, Holbrook (Holden, Eddington/Dedham), Sebasticook (Pittsfield/Newport), and teams from Bangor East and West both. Two Northern teams also were involved in Lincoln and Millinocket. The manager of the champs from Old Town is Josh Vost, while the runners up from Brewer/Glenburn/Orrington were directed by Ed Vanidestine.
