Kevin Pillar had four hits and four RBI, Justin Smoak homered twice, and Rick Porcello was touched up for eight earned runs over two innings Friday night as the Boston Red Sox had their 10 game winning streak snapped with a 13-7 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park.
Mookie Betts had three hits with a pair of RBI for Boston, including a pair of triples. Brock Holt and JD Martinez had a pair of hits. Holt, Xander Bogaerts, Mitch Moreland, and Jackie Bradley Jr. all had an RBI each. The Sox had an early 1-0 lead, before the runs really picked up in the second inning. The Blue Jays scored three in top of the inning, and the Red Sox responded with five of their own to take a 6-3 lead, highlighted by a Betts two run triple. Justin Smoak hit a solo homer, and Dwight Smith Jr. hit a two run shot as Toronto matched the five run outburst by Boston by putting up five in the top of the third to take back the lead 8-6, and would be a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
After Boston cut it to 8-7 in the fourth, Toronto added three more in the eighth on run scoring hits from Smoak, Kendrys Morales, and Pillar to put the game out of reach. Smoak added a two run homer, his second of game, in the ninth to finish with three hits and four RBI as well. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Yangervis Solarte added two hits a piece for the 43-50 Blue Jays.
Porcello (11-4), gave up seven hits in the 2.0 innings along with four walks and striking out two in the loss for 66-30 Boston. Hector Valazquez, Tyler Thornburg, Ryan Brasier, Joe Kelly, and Robby Scott all pitched out of the bullpen for the Sox. Jays starter Ryan Borucki was also roughed up in 3.0 innings of work, allowing seven runs (four earned), eight hits, four walks, and five strikeouts. Jake Petricka (1-0) got the win out of the Toronto bullpen.
