For the second time in three weeks the Maine Mammoths pulled off an upset of one the National Arena Leagues top teams. Saturday it was the Columbus Lions, as the Mammoths stopped a two point conversion in overtime to take a 42-41 win at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland.
Maine quarterback Jonathan Bane was 23-45 passing for 262 yards and five touchdowns. Bane also ran for a short touchdown and threw one interception on the Mammoths first possession. Rob Brown caught all five TD passes from Bane, and finished with nine receptions for 130 yards. Brown also had six tackles and one interception on defense, while linebacker Niko Sierra had five tackles and two sacks as Maine improves their record to 4-8 in their inaugural season.
Columbus (8-4) got a two point conversion run by quarterback Mason Espinosa, and also a short TD run to tie the game in the fourth quarter in both instances after trailing most of the second half. The Lions had crushed the Mammoths in Columbus, Georgia back on June 9 by a score of 55-34.
The Mammoths look to run their overall winning streak to three games and their home streak to four when they host the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks next Saturday at 7 pm.
