Sale dominates as offense explodes to help Red Sox grab 70th win

July 22, 2018

On Sunday afternoon at Comerica Park in Detroit Chris Sale continued to be in one of his most dominant stretches since joining the Boston Red Sox.

Sale (11-4) allowed only three baserunners (two hits) in six shutout innings to lead the Red Sox to a 9-1 win over the Tigers. Sale hit one batter and struck out nine. Sale is 6-1 with an 0.84 ERA in his last eight starts. He has struck out 87 and walked only 10 in 54 innings during that stretch.

Jackie Bradley JR came up with the big hit when he belted a three run homer to the opposite field in the fourth inning. The Red Sox offense exploded after scoring only one run in the first 18 innings of the series.

Andrew Benintendi broke the game open even more when he hit a two run triple in the seventh inning. Benintendi has six triples this season. Steve Pearce and Xander Bogaerts each had two hits and two runs scored.

Brandon Workman allowed three hits and one run in the seventh inning. Joe Kelly walked two but didn’t allow a run in the eighth inning. Tyler Thornburg bounced back after a tough outing on Saturday, he retired the side in order to close things out in the ninth inning.

The Red Sox are scheduled to open a three game series at Camden Yards against the Orioles on Monday night with Rick Porcello on the mound. The Red Sox (70-31) are the first team in the major leagues to reach 70 wins.
