July 24, 2018

Jonathan Schoop and Tim Beckham both homered and drove in three runs each Tuesday night, as the Baltimore Orioles won for just the second time in 12 meetings with the Boston Red Sox this season with a 7-6 win at Camden Yards. It was only the fourth loss for the Sox in the month of July (15-4).

JD Martinez gave Boston (71-32) the early lead with a solo homer in the first. Schoop gave the Birds their first lead of the night with a two run homer in the third. The Sox took back the lead in the fifth when Blake Swihart hit a solo homer which was his first homer since 2015, and Mookie Betts followed with another solo shot to make it 3-2 Boston. Beckham hit the game winner with his fourth long ball of the year in the bottom of the fifth, the two run homer made it 4-3 Baltimore. Beckham added a sacrifice fly for an RBI, and Schoop and Adam Jones added RBI singles in a three run sixth and the O’s were cruising up 7-3.

Martinez hit his league leading 31st homer in the top of the eighth, the two run bomb cut it to 7-5. For Martinez it was his second multiple home run game of the season, with the last also coming against Baltimore at Fenway Park on May 20. Jackie Bradley Jr opened the ninth with an infield single off Orioles closer Brad Brach, and with one out scored on an infield single by Rafael Devers to make it a one run game. After a walk to Swihart, Mookie Betts would hit a hard ground ball to second base that was turned into a 4-6-3 double play to end it.

Betts, Martinez, and Devers all had two hits a piece, with Martinez finishing with three RBI. Drew Pomeranz (1-4) lost his first start back, allowing four runs, six hits, two walks, with four strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Birds rookie Yefry Ramirez (1-3) won his first game of the season, allowing three runs, four hits, one walk, with six strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work. Brach picked up his 11th save as the Orioles won for just the 29th time in 102 games. During the game it was announced Baltimore reliever Zach Britton was traded to the Yankees for three prospects.

Boston sends David Price to the hill in the series finale Wednesday night at 7:05, to be opposed by Dylan Bundy for Baltimore.
