Sox bats slowed down by Arrieta and the Phillies

Jake Arrieta allowed only one run in seven innings to lift the Philadelphia Phillies to a 3-1 win over the Red Sox at Fenway Park on Tuesday night.

The Red Sox had plenty of chances but went 0-13 with runners in scoring position. Xander Bogaerts doubled home Blake Swihart for the only run for the home team in the sixth inning.

Drew Pomeranz (1-5) allowed two runs in five innings. He allowed four hits, four walks, and hit two batters. Joe Kelly, Heath Hembree, and Matt Barnes each pitched a scoreless inning out of the bullpen.

Ian Kinsler had one hit in his Red Sox debut. The Red Sox got there first two batters on in the ninth inning when JD Martinez walked and Bogaerts got hit by a pitch. They were stranded as Phillies closer Seranthony Dominguez retired Kinsler, pinch hitter Mookie Betts, and Brock Holt.

Martinez has reached base in 45 straight home games. Red Sox manager Alex Cora reported after the game that Bogaerts will get checked out more as he is very sore after getting hit in the hand in the ninth inning. The Red Sox (75-34) will start a four game series with the second place Yankees on Thursday. The Red Sox will enter the series either 4.5 or 5.5 games up in the American League East. The Yankees host the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday afternoon.
