Steve Pearce smacked three homers and Mookie Betts reached base six times to spark the Boston Red Sox to a 15-7 win over the New York Yankees at Fenway Park on Thursday night.
The Red Sox fell behind 4-0 before they came up to bat in the bottom of the second inning. The Red Sox scored one in the second and another in the third. What came next was the inning of the year.
That fourth inning started with a Jackie Bradley JR walk and was highlighted by a Pearce three run homer. The Red Sox scored eight runs while sending 13 batters to the plate.
The Red Sox were very aggressive on the base paths, including stealing three bases. They pounded out 19 hits, including Betts getting four hits, while Pearce, Andrew Benintendi, JD Martinez, and Ian Kinsler had three each. The newest member of the team Kinsler also made two outstanding defensive plays.
Brian Johnson (2-3) allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks, while striking out 11 in five innings. The Red Sox now have a 6.5 game lead over the Yankees in the American League East. Game two of the four game series is scheduled for Friday night at 7:10 PM with a Rick Porcello/Luis Severino pitching matchup on tap.
