The Boston Red Sox pounded out 19 hits on Thursday night in a 15-7 win over the New York Yankees. On Friday night, they defeated the Yankees 4-1 behind a masterful pitching performance from Rick Porcello at Fenway Park.
Porcello (14-4) only allowed two base runners, one was when he hit Brett Gardner on a 0-2 pitch to start the game. The other was a Miguel Andujar homer in the third inning.
Porcello retired the final 21 batters of the game. He struck out nine, while allowing only the one hit.
Steve Pearce continued his red hot hitting. After a three homer game on Thursday, Pearce drilled a first inning two run homer off Yankees ace Luis Severino. The bottom of the first inning started when Severino sailed a pitch high and tight towards Mookie Betts. Both benches were warned. Alex Cora got ejected for the first time as a Red Sox manager.
Mitch Moreland came off the bench to get two hits. Ian Kinsler had to leave the game with a hamstring injury. Cora said after the game that a DL stint is possible. Nathan Eovaldi will make his second Red Sox start when the Sox and Yanks play game three of their series on Saturday afternoon at 4:05 PM. The Red Sox are 77-34 and 7.5 games ahead of the Yankees at the top of the American League East
