After David Price left after three innings after getting struck off the wrist with a line drive, and then facing a pair of two run deficits to the Miami Marlins and only managing three hits over first six innings, things looked bleak Wednesday night for the Boston Red Sox. Then the seventh inning happened. Boston scored 11 runs in that frame, erasing a 5-3 deficit, and going on to defeat the Marlins 14-6 at Fenway Park.
Mookie Betts led the way reaching base four times with three hits, including two in the seventh, and a solo homerun in the game as well and three RBI. Eduardo Nunez had three hits, a solo homer, and a pair of RBI. Blake Swihart and Jackie Bradley Jr had a pair of hits and a pair of RBI each. Brock Holt and Ian Kinsler also had two hits each, and also added an RBI each as the Red Sox go back to 50 games over .500 at 92-42. Boston had 12 hits in the big seventh inning, and 16 for the game. Miami (53-81), got two hits and two RBI each from Starlin Castro and J.T. Realmuto, while Derek Dietrich and Austin Dean both hit solo homers.
Price allowed three runs, five hits, no walks, with three strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work before leaving with what they are calling a contusion on his left wrist. Hector Valazquez also went 3.0 innings, allowing two runs on three hits. Tyler Thornburg, Ryan Brasier, and Drew Pomeranz combined to allow just a run on one hit over the final 3.0 innings. Thornburg (2-0) got the win. Trevor Richards started for Miami, allowing three runs, three hits, two walks, with six strikeouts in 5.2 innings. The Marlins bullpen was roughed up for 11 runs on 13 hits the rest of the way using five relievers. Adam Conley (3-4) was tagged for the loss.
Boston heads to the Windy City for a four game series with the Chicago White Sox Thursday at 8:10. Rick Porcello gets the ball for the Red Sox in the opener, to be opposed by Lucas Giolito who toes the rubber for the White Sox.
