DEXTER— The Dexter Tigers football team turned up the defensive pressure and rolled to a 29-0 win over Washington Academy on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers allowed only 103 yards from scrimmage and four first downs. The Dexter (2-0) defense hasn’t allowed any points in their first two games. The Tigers won their opener at Ellsworth 35-6 where the points allowed came on a blocked punt.

“We have some tough kids. We play assignment football. We do a good job. WA is a tough team, they move the all quite a bit,”Dexter coach Andrew Shorey said. “We talk about responsibilities all week. One of the biggest things for us is gang tackling. To me it is effort.”

The Tigers took advantage of an excellent punt from Gage Stone to get a safety with 4:24 left in the first quarter. Stone punted it inside the five and the Tigers sacked Fran Furth in the end zone two plays later.

The next play from scrimmage after the safety the Tigers were scoring on a 40 yard touchdown run from Parker Ponte. Dexter took a 15-0 halftime lead when Logan Perkins connected with Tyler Chapman for a nine yard score with 1:08 remaining in the first half. Perkins had a big 23 yard pass play to Dillion Allen to highlight the 11 play drive. Perkins went 3-4 passing and ran the offense to perfection.

“Logan (Perkins) is doing a great job. The stats may not always show it but he is throwing the ball well,”Shorey said. “We are asking a lot of him and he is handling it very well. He is a great athlete.”

After the teams played a scoreless third quarter, the Tigers decided to give a heavy dosage of Allen. Dexter capped of a 10 play/4:32 drive with a three yard touchdown run from Allen. The Tigers gave it to Allen eight times during the drive. Allen finished with 84 yards on 18 carries.

“Dillion (Allen) had it going. He had a great second half. He came up huge for us.”

Cameron Paige capped the scoring with a 50 yard interception return with 2:09 remaining in fourth quarter. The Tigers had 186 total yards from scrimmage while Washington Academy had 103. Tyler Danaby and Jaden Talbot combined for 84 yards for the Raiders. Washington Academy (1-1) will host Ellsworth next Friday night. Dexter (2-0) will host Bucksport next Saturday.
