Husson football falls short in home opener

September 15, 2018

In a wild second half of scoring Saturday afternoon, the Husson University football team fell just short in their home opener at the Winkin Complex in Bangor. The 31-28 loss to Western New England is the first home loss for Husson since a 39-25 setback to Alfred University back on September 5, 2015.

A slow start to things as WNE led 3-0 at the half. The Golden Bears extended to 10-0 in the third quarter, before Husson (1-2) came to life scoring two of the next three touchdowns to take a 21-17 lead into the fourth quarter.

Peter Hoff scored on a two yard run to push Western New England (2-1) back into the lead, before Eagles quarterback Cory Brandon tossed a 30 yard TD to Tyler Halls with 8:14 left to give the Eagles back the advantage at 28-24. The Eagles defense couldn’t hold however, as Steven Fedorchak caught a 19 yard game winning score from Brendan Smith with 3:12 remaining to cap off a 12 play 75 yard drive.

Brandon finished 23-38 passing, 258 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. Solomon Hassen rushed for 121 yards on 28 attempts. Keyshaun Robinson caught two of Brandons touchdowns, and had five receptions for 59 yards. Kyle Gaudet caught eight passes for 80 yards, while Halls had four catches for 69 yards and the lone score. Defensively, Elvin Suazo had 13 tackles while Ace Curry had eight stops. Frank Curran added six tackles and a quarterback sack.

Husson has a week off before beginning conference play at SUNY-Maritime on September 29 at 1 pm.
