Long ball trouble for Price in Sox loss to Yanks

September 19, 2018

On the second straight night of a possible A.L. East clinching win for the Boston Red Sox, David Price was rocked for three homers in 5.1 innings pitched as the New York Yankees again avoided a celebration on their home field by the visitors, with a 10-1 win Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium.

Miguel Andujar hit a solo homer to start things in the bottom of the second for the Yankees to make it 1-0. A two run error by third baseman Eduardo Nunez made it 3-0. New York tacked on another in the fourth off Price when Luke Voit hit his first of two homers, the solo homer made it 4-0. Voit was at it again in the sixth to end the night for Price with a two run homer to make the score 6-1. A two run triple also in the sixth by Aaron Hicks, and then an RBI groundout by Greg Bird and a Hicks RBI single in the eighth ended the scoring. Sandy Leon had an RBI single in the fifth for Boston (103-48). JD Martinez had three hits while Nunez added two on the night. Voit had four hits overall with three RBI, while Hicks had a pair of hits and three RBI as well to pace New York (92-58).

Price (15-7) final stat line was six runs (four earned), five hits, with four walks and two strikeouts. Joe Kelly, Hector Valazquez, and William Cuevas finished up the final 3.2 innings allowing four runs on six hits combined. Luis Severino (18-8) got the win for the Yankees, allowing one run, six hits, with one walk, and six strikeouts in a 7.0 inning effort.

The Red Sox try to avoid the three game sweep and clinch the division once again Thursday night at 7:05. Boston sends lefty Eduardo Rodriguez to the bump, to be opposed by Masahiro Tanaka for New York.
