Every starter in the Boston Red Sox lineup got at least one hit Wednesday afternoon, as the hosts piled up 22 hits overall in crushing the Baltimore Orioles 19-3 in game one of a doubleheader at Fenway Park.
Rafael Devers led the way with a career high six RBI, including four hits and two homeruns for Boston (107-51). JD Martinez added three hits with three RBI, including his 42nd homerun of the season. Xander Bogaerts added two hits and four RBI, also his 22nd homer of 2018 and also reaching 100 RBI. Andrew Benintendi had three hits and two RBI. Mookie Betts, Mitch Moreland, Ian Kinsler, and Blake Swihart also had two hits each. Betts joined the 30 homer/30 stolen base club by stealing his 30th base in the second inning.
Boston scored five runs in the first inning, before the Orioles scored three in the top of second to get back in the game. The Sox rolled the rest of the way by outscoring their opponent 14-0 by putting up three runs in the fourth, a pair in the fifth and sixth each, three in the seventh, and four more in the eighth. Baltimore (45-112), got a solo homer from Trey Mancini and a two run shot from Renato Nunez off Boston starter David Price for their only runs.
Price (16-7) earned the win allowing three runs, six hits, three walks, with six strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Steven Wright, Heath Hembree, and Brandon Workman worked the final four innings allowing no runs on two hits. Ryan Meisinger (2-1) took the loss allowing five runs on four hits in just a third of an inning.
