Patrice Bergeron had three goals for a hat trick on Monday afternoon and David Pastrnak added a pair of goals, as the Boston Bruins skated past the Ottawa Senators 6-3 at TD Garden in a Columbus Day matinee in the home opener .
Bergeron got the scoring started just 30 seconds into the contest. Pastrnak tried to cut to front of net and jam the puck in but was stopped, and Bergeron jammed in the rebound as he was falling to the ice. Later in the first, Brad Marchand made a pass behind his back to a streaking Bergeron who snapped a wristshot into the left corner of the net on the powerplay to make it 2-0 Bruins after one.
Ryan Dzingel made it a one goal game in the second though with a pair of goals for the Senators. Those two goals were wedged around a Chris Wagner goal, his first with the Bruins, and it was 3-2 Boston after two. Bergerons hat trick came 4:38 into the third, sending a backhander towards the net while skating down the left wing. The backhander eluded Ottawa goalie Mike Condon who was screened by Pastrnak. With less than four minutes left Pastrnak got his first goal on a perfect feed from Bergeron, who ended up with a four point day. Pastrnak also added an empty netter with 1:38 to go. Pastrnak also finished the afternoon with four points (two goals, two assists). Bobby Ryan had a third period goal, his first of the year, for the visiting Senators.
Charlie McAvoy and Marchand had three assists a piece for 2-1-0 Boston, while Pastrnak had the pair to match Bergerons four points. Tuuka Rask made 28 saves on 31 shots. The former Princeton product Condon finished with 24 saves on 29 shots for 1-1-1 Ottawa.
Boston hosts Edmonton on Thursday night at 7 pm.
