The nationally ranked Maine Field Hockey team and women’s ice hockey team were both in action on Sunday afternoon, as the Field Hockey team finished up their regular season on the road and the ice hockey team hosted the #6 team in the nation at the Alfond.
At Lowell, Massachusetts the #15 Maine Field Hockey team took a 2-0 lead, before falling behind 4-2, then rallying to tie the game and winning it in double overtime to finish off the regular season with the win over UMass-Lowell.
Maine led 1-0 at the half on a Brittany Smith goal, and extended it to 2-0 early in the second half on a Brianna Ricker marker. But the next 17:27 of action was all Riverhawks, as Torrie Huk, Brooke Roberts, Jenna Burger, and Morgan Irons all scored to give UML a 4-2 lead with just over 15 minutes left. The Black Bears had the answer as Morgan Anson scored with 4:03 left, and Riley Field tied it with just 2:04 left to go in regulation sending the game to overtime. Early in the second overtime, Ricker scored her second goal of the day to end it. Mia Borley made seven saves on the day in the Maine goal, and improved her record to 14-3 on the season.
Maine finishes the regular season at 14-4, 5-3 in America East and will be the #2 seed when the America East Tournament begins this coming week in Palo Alto, California at Stanford University. UML ends their season 8-10, 2-6 in AE play.
At the Alfond Arena in Orono, the #6 Boston College Eagles women’s ice hockey team remained unbeaten in Hockey East play, and sent #10 Maine to their first home loss of the season Sunday afternoon with a 4-1 win at Alfond Arena in Orono.
After a scorless first period, BC broke on top with a pair of powerplay goals in the second. Cayla Barnes at 11:02, and then Grace Bizal 4:54 later would make it 2-0 Eagles. The Bears got within a goal early in the third period, when Tereza Vanisova scored at 2:48. Boston College had the answer though again on the powerplay, as Erin Connolly scored at 12:56 to make it 3-1. Daryl Watts scored with just one second left on the clock for the Eagles to finish off the scoring on the day.
Carly Jackson made 32 saves in the Black Bear net in the loss, while Maddy McArthur garnered the win for the Eagles with 24 stops. Maine was 0-8 on the powerplay, while BC went 3-7. Maine falls to 6-2 on the season, 2-2 in Hockey East while Boston College is now 7-2, 4-0.
Maine returns to action on Friday when they host Merrimack at 7 pm in a game to be played in Falmouth. The Bears then return to the Alfond for a Sunday 2 pm matchup and first meeting ever with the Holy Cross Crusaders.
