UMA women open conference play with a win

AUBURN, Me- Caitlin Lafountain scored a game high 37 points and grabbed 12 rebounds Saturday night, as the University of Maine-Augusta women’s basketball team got past Vermont Tech 71-64 in a Yankee Small College Conference opener at Central Maine Community College in Auburn.

Vermont Tech had a 22-20 lead after one quarter, before the Moose opened up a 10 point halftime lead by outscoring VT 19-7 in the second. VT got within three in the third quarter, but trailed by nine entering the fourth. UMA (1-1, 1-0 YSCC) would pull ahead for their largest advantage of 14 at 57-43 with 8:39 to go. The visitors from Vermont Tech (0-1, 0-1) got within six late, but that is as close as they would get.

Lafountain shot 13-18 from the floor and 11-19 from the line. Sidney Moore and Catherine Sanborn added 12 points a piece. Jordanna Morris had 23 points, 22 rebounds, eight assists, and nine steals for Vermont Tech, and Gabrielle Norwood came off the bench to score 23 points. UMA will host CMCC Tuesday night at the Augusta Civic Center.
