At the America East Tournament in Palo Alto, California, the Albany Great Danes Field Hockey team ended the Maine Black Bears season with a 2-0 win in the championship game Sunday afternoon.
Cosima Rocktaeschel scored off a penalty corner at 15:48 of the first half, while Elaina Burhcell scored at 32:45 to provide the difference in the game. Albany (16-4) had just five shots on goal in the game, while holding Maine to only two. Mia Borley made three saves in the Black Bear cage, while Melissa Nealon stopped both shots she faced for the shutout win.
Maine (16-5) had hopes Sunday night to get one of the eight at large bids to the NCAA tournament, but it was not to be. Albany plays the overall #2 seed in the tournament, Maryland.
At Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine got a pair of goals from Cailey Hutchinson and Lydia Murray to cruise past Holy Cross 8-0 in the first ever meeting between the two schools in women’s ice hockey.
Anna Zikova, Vendula Pribylova, Ida Press, Hutchinson, and Murray all scored in a five goal first period outburst for the Bears. Maddie Giordano scored the other Maine goal on the afternoon. Giordano, Press, Zikova, and Pribylova also added assists, while Ali Beltz added two.
Loryn Porter played the first two periods and got the win in the Maine net making 10 saves. Jillian Flynn made five saves in the third period in relief. Maine outshot HC 43-15. Maine was 2-6 on the powerplay, while Holy Cross was 0-6. Maine improves to 7-3, 3-3 in Hockey East. Holy Cross in its first year in Hockey East is 0-9-2, 0-6-0.
Maine is on the road next weekend, visiting Providence on Friday night before a stop in Connecticut to battle the Huskies Saturday afternoon.
