Foxcroft wins second straight regional championship; Video replay included

HAMPDEN- The Foxcroft Academy Ponies couldn’t play on their home field on Saturday evening due to the rain and snow causing poor field conditions. They made themselves at home in a 43-26 win over Bucksport in the class D Northern Maine championship game at Hampden Academy.

Matt Spooner rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries plus threw for 61 yards to power the Ponies attack.

Logan Martin rushed for 74 yards on eight carries, including the first score of the game on a four yard touchdown run with 6:59 left in the first quarter. The Bucks responded quickly when Logan Wardwell rushed into the end zone from 41 yards. Both teams didn’t convert the point after try.

Jeremy Richard finished an impressive Foxcroft drive with a one yard touchdown run. Luke Stedman converted the extra point to give the Ponies a 13-6 lead with 2:41 left in the first quarter. Michaleb Niles gave the Ponies a two score lead in the second quarter when he capped off a long drive with a three yard touchdown run. The Bucks cut the deficit to 20-12 when Brady Findlay connect with Tyson Gray on a one yard score.

The second half started with a very efficient Foxcroft drive that ended with a Spooner four yard touchdown run. Early in the fourth quarter, Stedman drilled a 22 yard field goal to give the Ponies a three score lead (30-12) with 9;43 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Carter Tolmasoff was coming off a 363 yard rushing game in a Bucks semifinal win over Mattanawcook. Tolmasoff was strong again in the regional final. He rushed for 130 yards on 27 carries, including a two yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 30-18. Tolmasoff also had 37 receiving yards.

Spooner responded with a 59 yard score to put the score at 36-18. Sekton Wandikbo added a score for the Ponies. The final score of the gene came on a Findlay and Gray connection from 35 yards out.

Findlay threw for 107 yards on 9-20 passing. Skylar McNair and David Gross combined for 19 tackles for the Bucks. Bucksport finished the season at 8-2. Niles ran for 111 yards while Martin went for 74. Richard recorded 13 tackles. Foxcroft (10-0) will take on Wells in the class D State game on Friday, November 16th at the University of Maine at 7 PM. Wells defeated Foxcroft in last years class D state game.
