The University of Maine women’s ice hockey team was on the road for a pair of Hockey East games Friday and Saturday, visiting Providence and Connecticut.
On Friday at Providence, Rhode Island, the Friars scored a goal in each period and took down the Black Bears 3-1.
Tereza Vanisova had given Maine a 1-0 first period lead, but an equalizing goal by Neve Van Pelt in the first tied it 1-1, before Kate Friesen got the game winner at 12:40 of the middle period. Christina Putigna added a late third period goal as PC improved to 7-2, 4-1 in Hockey East. Carly Jackson made 30 saves in the loss, while Madison Myers made 23 in the Friars win.
Saturday afternoon at Storrs, Connecticut, the UConn Huskies had four different goal scorers to take a 4-1 win over Maine.
Lydia Murray once again had put Maine up first with a goal on a two on one break with Cailey Hutchinson just 3:46 into the game to make it 1-0. Leona Sim tied the game for the Huskies at 14:20. In the second UConn got the eventual game winner from Briana Colangelo to make it 2-1. Just 56 seconds later, Natalie Snodgrass scored an insurance marker making it 3-1. Catherine Crawley scored on a breakaway 1:29 into the third period to finish the scoring. Loryn Porter made 19 saves in net in the Maine loss, while Morgan Fisher made 33 stops in the Connecticut win. UConn is now 6-5-1, 3-4-1 in Hockey East.
Maine is now 7-5, 3-5 and will return home to Alfond Arena to host #6 Northeastern next Friday and Saturday. Fridays puck drop is 6 pm, while Saturdays game is slated for 2 pm.
