After a disappointing Patriots 34-10 loss to the Titans Sunday afternoon, the other two major Boston sports teams took center stage later on Sunday night. The Boston Bruins were at home hosting one of last years Stanley Cup Finals participants in the Las Vegas Knights, while the Boston Celtics finished out a road trip in Portland, Oregon against the Trailblazers.
At TD Garden in Boston, the Bruins got two first period goals to take an early 2-0 lead and went on to defeat the Golden Knights 4-1.
Danton Heinen scored the opening goal at 2:54 of the first to make it 1-0. Rookie Jeremy Lauzon made it 2-0 in favor of the hosts when he scored his first NHL goal in his fifth career game. Brad Marchand made it 3-0 when he scored just 58 seconds into the second period. David Pastrnak would add his NHL leading 16th goal in the third period as the Bruins won their second straight. Cody Eakin had a second period goal for Las Vegas (7-10-1). Pastrnak also added an assist on the night, and Jaroslav Halak stopped 37 of 38 shots in the win (77 saves in last two games). Former Bruin product Malcolm Subban stopped 33 of 37 shots in the Vegas net. Boston (10-5-1) heads out on a four game road trip on Wednesday at 10 pm when they visit Colorado to battle the Avalanche.
At the Moda Center in Portland, the Trailblazers won their fourth straight game taking down the Boston Celtics 100-94, to end a tough road trip for the green and white.
As they done in their previous two games, Boston (7-6) got behind big in the second quarter. After a slow start the Celtics had gotten within a point in the second, before the Blazers finished the first half on a 26-10 spurt to take a 17 point halftime lead. In the third the Celtics got within five before Portland extended back to 13 by the end of the quarter. Boston made one more run tying the game on a Marcus Morris three pointer with 7:27 to play, but was never able to take the lead in the game and finished 1-4 on the trip.
Jayson Tatum led the C’s with 27 points and eight rebounds. Kyrie Irving had 21 points, six assists, and five steals. Morris finished with 13 points and six rebounds, while Al Horford had 10 points, eight rebounds, three asists, and two steals. Portland (10-3) got 19 points, five rebounds, and 12 assists from Damian Lilliard, while Jusuf Nuric had 18 points, 17 rebounds, and three assists. Boston returns home and will host Chicago on Wednesday night at 7:30 pm.
