At the Navy Classic at Alumni Hall in Annapolis, Maryland the Maine women’s basketball team got a late basket and defensive stop by Tanesha Sutton for a 47-46 win over Pennsylvania in the tournament title game Sunday afternoon.
After defeating NC A&T Saturday in a game that featured 15 lead changes, it was more of the same Sunday as the Bears and Quakers had 11 lead changes and three ties. In a low scoring contest, Penn (4-2) held a 20-18 halftime lead and a 37-32 advantage after three quarters. Maine (4-2) trailed by six with 4:15 left, until a Maddy McVicar three pointer with 3:42 to go pulled the Bears to within 43-40. Sutton hit a pair of free throws with 2:13 left to cut it to 43-42. Eleah Parker made one of two from the line to make it a two point Penn lead with 49 seconds left, before Parise Rossignol hit a three pointer to give Maine a 45-44 lead with 25 seconds left. Parker scored in the paint with 11 seconds left to give Penn back a 46-45 advantage. Sutton drove the lane and scored a layup with 5.5 seconds remaining to give the Bears a one point lead, and then stole an entry pass as Penn tried to get the ball inside to Parker as time would expire.
Sutton had 16 points, Rossignol had 12 to lead Maine with both adding seven rebounds. Blanca Millan also chipped in nine points. Parker had 17 points and nine rebounds to lead Penn, while Katie Kinum added 12.
Maine travels to North Carolina to battle the UNC Tarheels next Sunday afternoon at 2 pm.
At Hamden, Connecticut the Maine men’s basketball team had a halftime lead but couldn’t hold on, falling to Quinnipiac 58-50 at the Peoples United Center.
Maine (0-6) led the entire first half, by as many as 11 points and led by seven at the break. QU took their first lead on a three pointer by Jacob Rogoni with 14:20 left in the game, and later built the lead to as many as 11 and keeping the Black Bears winless on the season.
Isaiah White led the way for Maine with 19 points. Vincent Eze added 10 points, while Vilgot Larsson and Sergio El Darwich chipped in seven points a piece. Tyrese Williams had 19 points and seven rebounds for 2-2 Quinnipiac. Cameron Young had 12 points and six rebounds. Rigoni and Aaron Robinson also chipped in 11 points a piece.
Maine will host Princeton on Wednesday night at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor at 7 pm.
