Josh Leivo scored a late second period powerplay goal, and Frederik Andersen made 38 saves Monday night to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs past the Boston Bruins 4-2 at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.
Toronto (17-8-0) jumped ahead by a goal twice, with Boston responding each time through the first 38:38 of action. Travis Dermott scored his first goal of the season at 17:44 of the first to make it 1-0 Leafs. David Pastrnak tied it for the Bruins on a powerplay goal at 3:39 of the second period. Igor Ozhiganov got his first of the year for Toronto at 13:06 to make it 2-1, before Pastrnak tied it again just 1:16 later. Leivos game winner came at the 18:38 mark on a net drive by Tyler Ennis where the initial shot was stopped on a right pad save by Bruins goalie Jaroslav Halak, but the rebound spit out to the stick of Leivo who buried it into the back of the net. Zach Hyman added a third period empty net goal at 18:25 of the third to end the scoring.
Halak ended with 27 saves in the loss. Torey Krug and Brad Marchand each had two assists for Boston. Mitch Marner had three assists for Toronto. The Bruins were 1-2 on the powerplay, while the Leafs were 1-1. Boston will host the New York Islanders Thursday night at 7 pm.
Kyrie Irving had a double double on Monday night, and the Boston Celtics knocked down 19 three pointers leading pretty much start to finish in a 124-107 win over the New Orleans Pelicans at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Boston (11-10) trailed only once on a pair of free throws by Anthony Davis in the first 30 seconds of action, leading by as many as 20 in the first half. New Orleans (10-11) got it to nine points at the half, before the Celtics increased it back to 18 in the third quarter. The Pelicans made one more run in the fourth quarter, getting within six with 8:49 left but the Celtics next four shots made were all from the three point line to put the game away going up by 19 again late. New Orleans committed 22 turnovers in the loss.
Irving finished with 26 points, five rebounds, 10 assists, and five steals. Al Horford and Jayson Tatum both had 20 points a piece, with Tatum adding seven rebounds. Marcus Morris also had a double double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Terry Rozier also chipped in 14 points. Davis filled up the stat sheet with a double double of his own with 27 points, 16 rebounds, five assists, three steals, and three blocks for New Orleans who saw their five game home winning streak end. Nikola Mirotic added 25 points and five rebounds. Boston will host Cleveland Friday night at 7 pm.
