AUGUSTA, Me- The UMaine-Machias Clippers men’s and women’s basketball teams swept a Yankee Small College Conference doubleheader on Wednesday night at the Augusta Civic Center.
In the opening women’s game, Raegene Womack led three players in double figures as the Clippers fought off a slow start to pick up a 58-29 win.
The Moose led 7-4 after one quarter, but UMM (6-1, 3-0 YSCC) outscored the hosts 22-2 in the second quarter to take a 17 point halftime lead and then cruised in the second half leading by as many as 31. UMA (1-5, 1-3) shot just 3-33 from the floor in the first half, and just 10-72 (13.9%) in the game. Womack added 25 rebounds, three assists, and five steals for UMM. Abbey Allen and Tate Dolley each added 10 points a piece.
Emily Billings had nine points and eight rebounds for UMA, while Sidney Moore added eight points. UMA heads to Vermont to compete in the Ed Hockenburry Classic facing Norwich on Friday night at 6 pm.
In the men’s matchup, despite a game high 27 points from Dustin Simpson-Bragg the Moose got outscored 37-25 in the second half in falling to the Clippers 90-80.
UMA (0-8, 0-4) led by as many as seven in a tight first half, while UMM held a biggest lead of four points with the Moose holding a slight 45-43 lead at the half. The Clippers scored the first seven point of the second half, and never trailed again leading by 14 late to pick up their fourth win (4-3, 3-0).
Simpson-Bragg added 12 rebounds, five assists, two steals, and two blocks. Noah Thompson added 14 points, and Devon Begin chipped in 10. Dante Ramos led UMM with 21 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists. Jahvon Royster had 14 points, 17 rebounds, four steals, and four blocks. Alexander Blake added 11 points, while Thomas Papagionopolis chipped in 10 points.
The Moose men will also participate in the Ed Hockenburry Classic when they face Norwich in Vermont Saturday at 6 pm.
