Both the Maine men’s and women’s hockey teams were looking to pick up a Hockey East weekend sweep at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vermont on Saturday.
In the men’s game, Eduards Tralmaks had two third period goals and Jeremy Swayman was solid once in net as Maine ended up with a 3-3 tie with Vermont, picking up three of four possible weekend Hockey East points after a Friday night win.
Vermonts Liam Coughlin and Maines Brady Keeper exchanged second period goals to make it 1-1 after two. Tralmaks scored his first goal at 9:52 of the third to make it 2-1 Maine, but was shortlived as Joey Cipollone tied it for Vermont 30 seconds later. Just 1:20 later, Tralmaks once again put Maine on top with helpers from Sam Becker and Mitch Fossier. Wth 3:43 left in regulation, Max Kaufman tied the score for the Catamounts. Neither team could manage any great chances in overtime.
Swayman made 40 saves, while Stefanos Lekkas made 30 for Vermont. Fossier had two assists for Maine, while Kaufman had two for Vermont. Maine is now 5-7-2 overall, 3-3-2 in Hockey East. The next regular season countable game for the Black Bears in December 28 at Princeton.
Earlier in the women’s contest, Maude Poulin-Labelle scored the game winner in the second period as Vermont avoided a sweep with a 3-2 win over Maine.
The Catamounts took leads of 1-0 and 2-1, before Maine responded each time on goals from Alyson Matteau and Anna Zikova. Poulin-Labelles winner came at 12:29 of the asecond.
Carly Jackson made 22 saves in the loss in the Maine net, while Melissa Black made 24 in the Vermont win. Maine is now 10-7-1, 4-7-1 in HE play. Maines last game before Christmas break is at Harvard next Friday night at 6 pm.
