Samuel Idowu had a game high 21 points Saturday afternoon to lead the Saint Peters Peacocks to a 63-59 overtime win over the Maine Black Bears in non-conference men’s basketball action at the Yanitelli Center in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Maine (0-8) trailed by as many as seven points in a back and forth first half that ended with the game tied at 28 at the half. The Bears took a 50-49 lead with 3:19 to go in regulation on a layup by Andrew Fleming. The Peacocks took the lead back on a pair of free throws by Klay Brown with 1:55 to go, before Vincent Eze tied it up for Maine with 1-2 from the line with 1:30 left. Both teams missed two shots in the last minute of action, including a miss by Eze just as time expired sending the game to overtime.
St Peters (2-5) opened up a six point overtime on a three pointer by Dallas Watson and a pair of baskets from Idowu. Maine down three with 13 seconds left got an offensive rebound off their own missed free throw and a chance to tie it with nine seconds remaining, a turnover by Fleming however and a 1-2 effort from foul line by Cameron Jones iced it for the home team.
Fleming had 14 points and eight rebounds for Maine, while Vilgot Larsson had 13 and Ilija Stojilikovic added 12 points. Idowu added six rebounds for the Peacocks, while Jones had 17 points and six rebounds. Maine returns home to host Fordham Tuesday night at 7 pm at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.
