The Husson Eagles women’s basketball team pulled off a big upset on Sunday afternoon. Kenzie Worcester scored a game high 23 points to lead the Eagles to a 64-59 win over #8 University of Chicago at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tennessee in the Music City Classic.
Worcester also became the second leading scorer in Husson women’s basketball history in leading the 5-5 Eagles to the win. Husson led by as many as two in the opening quarter, while UChicago led by seven and held a 16-11 advantage after the first 10 minutes. The Eagles used a 10-0 run to start the second to take a 21-16 lead, and led the Maroons 29-26 at the break.
Husson used another 8-0 spurt to take their biggest lead of 13 in the third quarter, capped off by Emma Alley three pointer and a three point play by Logan Huckins. The Eagles led 48-37 into the final quarter. With a seven point lead with two minutes left, the Maroons made their final push. Jamie Kockenmeister knocked down a three with 1:16 left. Mia Farrell made 1-2 from line to cut it to 59-56 with 46 seconds left, and after Worcester knocked down a pair from the line to make it 61-56, Farrell knocked down a three to cut it to 61-59 with 24 seconds remaining. Worcester and Huckins though went 3-4 from the line in last 20 seconds to preserve the win.
Worcester added seven rebounds and three steals to her game high in points. Huckins was the only other Eagle with double digits with 19 off the bench. Farrell had 18 for UChicago (9-2), while Kockenmeister added 13 points and seven rebounds. The Maroons only other loss this year came four weeks ago against the #2 team in nation Thomas More.
Husson shot only 2-13 from the three point line, while UChicago was 12-29. UChicago was only 3-11 from the foul line, while Husson went 20-24. The Eagles outscored the Maroons 26-6 in points off turnovers. Husson resumes conference play next Friday and Saturday at UMaine-Presque Isle with Fridays game slated for 7:30 pm, and a Saturday matinee at 3 pm.
