The University of Maine men’s ice hockey team played their first of two non-conference games remaining at the Alfond Wednesday night, while the men’s basketball team finished their non-league portion of their schedule with a visit to Brown University.
At the Alfond Arena, Maine used four different goal scorers to top Colorado College 4-2 in front of 2,803 fans at the Alfond.
Eric Middendorf gave CC the lead at 2:41 of the first, before Maines Chase Pearson tied it 1:14 later. The Tigers jumped back in front when Trey Bradley scored just 41 seconds after the Pearson marker to give the advantage back to the visitors. Goals by Brendan Robbins at 8:06, Tim Doherty at 11:07, and Patrick Shea at 18:11 of the second period though lifted the hosts to their first win of 2019.
Colorado College (8-10-2) went 0-3 with the powerplay, while Maine was 0-2. Jeremy Swayman made 33 saves in the win, while Alex Leclerc made 21 in the loss. Maine is now 6-9-2 and will play Yale in Portland next Monday in the final non-conference game of season.
At the Pizzitola Sports Center in Providence, Rhode Island the Brown Bears took an early 16 point lead and led by as many as 19, then had to hold off Maine for a 75-67 men’s basketball win.
Brown (10-4) led by 14 at the break, and then after a Zach Hunsaker three pointer just over five minutes into the second half led 53-34. Down 65-55 with 4:43 left, Maine (2-13) made their final push. Sergio El Darwich scored five straight points, with a three pointer and a layup. Andrew Fleming then converted an unconventional three point play cutting it to 65-63 with 2:45 left. The hosts however would ice the game in the final 2:18 going 8-8 from the foul line in garnering their 10th win.
Fleming led the way for Maine with 21 points and seven rebounds. Isiaiah White had 20, and El Darwich finished with 15. Desmond Cambridge had 19 points for Brown, Tamenang Choh had 11, while Hunsacker and Josh Howard each had 10 each. Maine now heads into conference play where they open the America East schedule Saturday on the road at UMBC.
