MILO, Me- The Penquis Valley Patriots jumped to a quick early lead Friday night, and then cruised to a 42-24 Northern Maine high school girls basketball crossover win over the Schenck Wolverines at Oakes Memorial Gym at Penquis Valley High School.
The defensive pressure applied by Penquis (6-3) seemed to bother the visiting Wolverines from the very start, as the Patriots jumped out to a pair of 12 point first half leads including 14-2 after the opening eight minutes of action and never trailed. Schenck (4-2) made it a nine point game just before the halftime buzzer on a jumper from Stearns transfer Julia Stanley to cut it to 22-13.
Schenck would get the closest they had been since the first quarter when Cassie Russell knocked down a three pointer on the opening possession of the third quarter to make it 22-16. Penquis though responded with a 6-0 run and had pushed it back to 10 at 28-18 at the end of the quarter. The Wolverines didn’t mount much of a threat to get back into the game from that point, as the Class C Patriots opened up as much as a 19 point lead in the fourth quarter in winning their fifth consecutive game. Class D Schenck drops their second straight after losing their first game of the season in their previous outing to PVHS.
Megan Valvo led the way for Penquis with 13 points and five rebounds. Katelyn Bolstridge put in eight points, grabbed seven rebounds, and had three assists. Camryn Rolfe had seven points, three rebounds, and four steals. 6 foot sophomore center Sydney Fowles added six points and 10 rebounds. Stanley had six points for Schenck, with Russell adding five. Kristin Russell and Samantha Falone chipped in four points each. Penquis returns to action next Wednesday at PVHS, while Schenck has a quick turnaround with a game at Greenville Saturday.
