Richard and Smith power Foxcroft boys basketball to win over John Bapst

DOVER-FOXCROFT- The Foxcroft Ponies ended the game on a 10-0 run to get a 78-73 win over John Bapst on Tuesday evening at Foxcroft Academy.

John Bapst held a 21-17 lead after the first quarter and a 39-37 halftime advantage. The Crusaders made seven 3-pointers in the first half, including three from Jagger Cummings.

Hyatt Smith (9) and Jeremy Richard (7) combined for 16 of the Ponies 25 third quarter points. Foxcroft held a 62-60 lead heading into the final quarter.

John Bapst outscored Foxcroft 13-6 early in the fourth quarter as Cummings continued his hot shooting. He finished with 28 points, including seven 3-pointers. Ponies coach Tyler Erickson changed things up defensively and put a box and one on Cummings. Lucas Ames made it difficult for the Crusaders to get Cummings the ball and that helped Foxcroft end the game on their 10-0 run.

In the middle of the run, Richard made two free throws with 1:30 remaining to give the Ponies a lead they wouldn’t give back. Richard scored a team high 24 points, including 17 in the second half. Richard shot 14-17 from the free throw line. He also contributed three rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Smith added 17 points and seven rebounds. Jed Dean and Jair Garcia each had 11 points and three 3-pointers. Foxcroft (7-9) is scheduled to travel to Ellsworth on Wednesday night.

Foxcroft shot 20-27 from the free throw line, while John Bapst shot 6-8. The Ponies out rebounded John Bapst 28-25. Cayman Zephir put in 11 points for the Crusaders, while Alec Gagnon and Noah Dube added nine points each. John Bapst (3-12) has now lost 11 straight games. They will host Caribou at the University of Maine on Saturday afternoon.
